My work is based on a contemporary interpretation of animism. At an early age I developed a habit of

collecting discarded objects wherever I lived. Each scavenged or collected object seemed to hold a

differing dormant personality that needed to be explored.  I found that by exploring these objects

through drawing, I could access their hidden personalities and symbolic meanings beyond obvious

interpretations. They functioned alone like a note of music or a single syllable. When combined into

a composite composition a complete personality was formed. Over time, an Animist language

became revealed. My language is informed by the writings of Sir James George Frazer and William

Butler Yeats, reading folktales and conversations with members of animist based religions.

What particularly interests me is how a complex situation can be communicated through unusual

objects. For me, this confirms a type of universal symbolic language or collective unconscious at

work.

With my studio work, I start with a significant event in my life that has universal applications,

such as: a death, the repetitive nature of a dead-end job, falling in love, etc. and build a

narrative using the appropriate items from the collection. Each object used in the composition is

carefully chosen for its personality and personal symbolic significance creating a narrative in the end.

For my process I find it important to distract the critical portion of the mind, in order to make intuitive

and unexpected decisions in building the image. Printmaking has been the ideal vehicle for achieving

this, as chemical reactions, left-right reversal, layering of color and a host of other technical

considerations must be considered at every juncture. This acts as a constant logical distraction, which

allows the unconscious to play with the imagery. The nature of print creation is often slower than

more direct methods such as drawing, this too is beneficial. Since it can take months of regular work

to achieve an image, the end-product has been looked at and explored from varying perspectives

which creates a carefully considered image in the end.
